The US Navy circumference method was developed for military fitness screening and provides a practical, equipment-light estimate of body fat percentage from simple tape-measure readings. Unlike BMI, it directly estimates the proportion of fat mass in the body without requiring a scale, caliper, or laboratory equipment.
The American Council on Exercise (ACE) endorses circumference-based body fat estimation as a practical screening tool for fitness professionals. The US Navy method is accurate within 1–3 percentage points of laboratory hydrostatic weighing when measurements are taken correctly.
ACE Body Fat Category Reference Table
| Category | Men | Women | Health Implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Essential Fat | 2–5% | 10–13% | Minimum for organ and hormone function |
| Athletic | 6–13% | 14–20% | Elite sport and performance fitness |
| Fitness | 14–17% | 21–24% | Above-average health and fitness |
| Average | 18–24% | 25–31% | Acceptable — moderate lifestyle activity |
| Obese | ≥ 25% | ≥ 32% | Elevated metabolic and cardiovascular risk |
Men (Chest, Abdomen, Neck sites)
Women (Waist, Hip, Neck sites)
All measurements in centimetres.
How to Measure Correctly
| Site | Landmark | Tape Position |
|---|---|---|
| Neck | Just below the larynx (Adam's apple) | Perpendicular to neck axis; slight downward slope at front |
| Waist (Men) | At navel level | Horizontal, parallel to floor |
| Waist (Women) | Narrowest visible point | Horizontal, parallel to floor |
| Hip (Women) | Widest part of hips/buttocks | Horizontal, parallel to floor |
Rules for all sites: measure on bare skin, tape snug but not compressing tissue, measure at end of normal exhale, take 2–3 readings and use the average.
- Accuracy: ±3–4% error vs. DEXA; slightly less accurate than 7-site skinfold in trained hands.
- Hip measurement sensitivity: In women, a 1 cm error in hip measurement changes result by ~0.5% body fat.
- Does not capture fat distribution: A person with identical circumference measurements but different visceral-to-subcutaneous fat ratios will get the same result.
- Not validated for extreme body sizes: Less reliable at very high (> 40%) or very low (< 6%) body fat levels.
