Understanding Face Shape Classification
Face shape analysis is a systematic method of categorizing facial geometry based on four key measurements: forehead width, cheekbone width, jawline width, and face length. Professional stylists, opticians, makeup artists, and cosmetic surgeons use face shape classification to give evidence-based aesthetic recommendations.
A 2021 study in Aesthetic Plastic Surgery confirmed that face shape classification based on geometric ratios reliably predicts patient satisfaction with hairstyle and eyewear recommendations compared to visual estimation alone.
The Six Classic Face Shape Categories
| Face Shape | Key Characteristics | Most Notable Feature | Prevalence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oval | Length 1.3–1.5× width, forehead slightly wider than jaw | Balanced proportions | Most common |
| Round | Length ≈ width, soft jaw, wide cheekbones | Full cheeks, soft chin | Common |
| Square | Forehead ≈ jaw ≈ cheekbones, strong angular jaw | Defined jawline | Common in men |
| Heart | Wide forehead, narrow jaw, sometimes pointed chin | V-shaped jawline | Common in women |
| Diamond | Narrow forehead + jaw, very wide cheekbones | Prominent cheekbones | Less common |
| Oblong / Rectangle | Length > 1.5× width, uniform width top to bottom | Long, narrow face | Moderate prevalence |
How to Measure Your Face Shape
All measurements are taken with a flexible tape measure against the skin:
- 1Forehead Width: Place the tape from one hairline edge to the other at the widest point — typically halfway between eyebrows and hairline.
- 2Cheekbone Width: Start below the outer corner of one eye, across the bridge of the nose to the equivalent point on the opposite side.
- 3Jawline Width: Measure from below one ear, across the jaw point, to below the other ear. This is NOT the chin width.
- 4Face Length: From the centre of the hairline (top of forehead) vertically down to the tip of the chin.
Key Ratios in Face Shape Analysis
- Oval: 1.3–1.5
- Round: < 1.2
- Oblong: > 1.5
- Heart / Diamond: > 1.2 (wider forehead than jaw)
- Square: ≈ 1.0 (equal)
Hairstyle Recommendations by Face Shape
Oval Face
The "universal" face shape — suits almost every hairstyle. Best: textured layers, blunt bobs, undercuts. Avoid: styles that add bulk at the sides without framing the chin.
Round Face
Goal: add vertical length, reduce horizontal width. Best: long layers with height at the crown, side parts, angular cuts. Avoid: blunt bobs, round layers, centre parts with no volume.
Square Face
Goal: soften the strong jawline. Best: soft waves, side-swept fringes, long layers below the jaw. Avoid: jaw-length bobs that emphasize the squareness.
Heart Face
Goal: balance the wider forehead with lower volume. Best: chin bobs, side fringes, hair with volume below the cheekbones. Avoid: top buns, heavy crown volume, sleek pulled-back styles.
Diamond Face
Goal: add width at forehead and jaw. Best: side-swept bangs, textured bobs at chin length. Avoid: slicked-back or centre-parted styles that expose the full face width.
Oblong / Rectangle Face
Goal: add perceived width, reduce length. Best: waves, curtain bangs, layered bobs. Avoid: centre-parted straight long hair, mohawks, top-heavy styles.
Eyewear Recommendations by Face Shape
| Face Shape | Best Glasses Frames | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Oval | Any style — oval, wayfarer, cat-eye | Frames too large for face |
| Round | Angular, rectangular, square frames | Round or small oval frames |
| Square | Oval, round, rimless, curved frames | Geometric square frames |
| Heart | Bottom-heavy, rimless, oval, wayfarer | Heavy top frames, cat-eye |
| Diamond | Oval, rimless, brow-line frames | Narrow or very angular frames |
| Oblong | Wide, decorative frames, semi-rimless | Very small or narrow frames |
